Former Iowa State Cyclone Tyrese Haliburton and the United States Men’s Basketball Team won the Olympic Gold Medal Saturday in Paris with a 98-87 victory over France.

The United States went 6-0 in the Olympic Games to win the gold medal. Haliburton appeared in three of the six games, averaging 2.7 points, 0.7 assists and 0.3 steals per game. He is one of just 12 players on the team to earn the medal.

Haliburton becomes the second former Iowa State men’s basketball player to earn a medal and the first to earn a gold. Jeff Grayer earned a bronze medal in 1988. Haliburton is the eighth former Cyclone to earn a Gold Medal and will have a banner hanging in Hilton Coliseum.

Tyrese Haliburton is just happy to be here.

After the U.S. men’s basketball team clinched its fifth consecutive gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics with a 98-87 win over the host country France at Bercy Arena on Saturday, Haliburton turned to Twitter to celebrate his first career Olympic medal. He made light of his limited playing time in the process.

“When you ain’t do nun on the group project and still get an A,” Haliburton captioned a photo of himself showing off his Olympic gold medal.

With a loaded roster featuring NBA champions and MVPs, including veterans LeBron James, Steph Curry and Kevin Durant, the Indiana Pacers star often found himself outside of the rotation. Haliburton didn’t log any minutes in Team USA’s gold medal game victory on Saturday or the semifinal win against Serbia on Thursday.

The Paris Games marked the first for Haliburton, who is coming off an Eastern Conference Finals appearance and All-NBA Third Team selection with the Pacers. Haliburton made appearances in three of Team USA’s six Olympic Games in Paris, totaling 26 minutes overall.

Although Haliburton’s time on the court was limited, the 2028 Los Angeles Games could be a different story. Haliburton could potentially have a larger role on the 2028 Olympic team as the veterans pass the torch to the up-and-coming stars when the Games come back stateside in Los Angeles.

The United States won its fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal with a nail-biting win over France on Saturday and star guard Tyrese Haliburton had jokes to go along with the hardware.

Haliburton burst onto the scene to become one of the best guards in the NBA this past season. He earned his second straight All-Star bid and helped lead his Pacers squad to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in a decade.

Haliburton parlayed that success into a roster spot with Team USA for the 2024 Paris Olympics, but when you’re on a roster filled with future Hall of Famers, playing time is not guaranteed, no matter how good you are.

Haliburton was the odd man out of the rotation in three of the six games the United States played en route to winning gold.

After he collected his medal, the star point guard was able to laugh at himself a bit in a social media post.
