Former Indiana quarterback Michael Penix Jr. has commanded loads of attention in the college football world this season, leading Washington to a national championship berth after finishing second in the Heisman Trophy voting.

However, there’s another Hoosiers connection in Monday’s championship game: Huskies coach Kalen DeBoer.

DeBoer, in his second year coaching Washington, spent one season in Bloomington as Indiana’s offensive coordinator in 2019, where he coached Penix under Tom Allen before bringing the quarterback to Washington after the 2021 season. Now, the pair are leading No. 2 Washington (14-0, 9-0 Pac-12) against No. 1 Michigan (14-0, 9-0 Big Ten

Alabama Football’s Kalen DeBoer finally regaining the reputation he has earned

Alabama Football will have a better offense than last season because of Kalen DeBoer and more offensive talent than he has ever coached before.

When Kalen DeBoer was hired to coach Alabama Football, two storylines emerged quickly. One was centered on the recognition any coach with a 104-12 record deserves. The other storyline was despite DeBoer’s record, the fortunes of Alabama Football would plummet in the post-Nick Saban Era.

A few doubters about DeBoer’s success at Alabama remain locked in on the failure theme. They are being drowned out by the reality that Kalen DeBoer has handled the Alabama transition masterfully. After all, Alabama is still Alabama, even without Nick Saban as the head coach.

There is irrefutable evidence of what a good offensive coach DeBoer is. After serving as the Southern Illinois Offensive Coordinator and WR coach in 2010-2013, DeBoer became the OC/QB coach at Eastern Michigan in 2014. In the 2013 season, Eastern Michigan averaged 18.8 points per game (No. 113 in the FBS). In Deboer’s second season with the Eagles, the offense was No. 91 and scored 25.4 points per game. In his third and last season with Eastern Michigan, the Eagles were ranked No. 61 in Scoring Offense at 29.8 points per game.

A more impressive transition occurred after DeBoer joined Fresno State as OC/QB coach. In 2016 the Bulldogs were No. 125 in Scoring Offense at 17.7 points per game. DeBoer immediately bumped Fresno State up to No. 77 in the 2017 season. In the 2018b season, Fresno State was No. 26 in Scoring Offense, at 34.6 points per game.

In DeBoer’s one season at Indiana in 2019, he took the Hoosiers from the No. 88 Scoring Offense the season before to No. 42, at 31.8 points per game.

Under Tommy Rees, Alabama Football was No. 24 in Scoring Offense last season. Washington was No. 13 in the same stat and advanced to the National Championship Game. How good will DeBoer’s Alabama Crimson Tide offense be in 2024? Proof for an answer is about six to 10 weeks away. Until then, Alabama fans can make a simple claim that the Crimson Tide offense will produce more points than last season. The simple claim can be turned into a bold one by stating that before the season ends, the Crimson Tide’s offense will be better than Washington’s was last season. And maybe a lot better, because never before has a Kalen DeBoer offense been blessed with the roster talent of Alabama.

The tweet below is rather goofy, but notice the two words used to describe Kalen DeBoer.
