Mark Schwarzer has stated that he thought Manchester City’s new boy Josko Gvardiol would secure a transfer to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool this summer.

After the conclusion of the 2023 summer transfer window, it was suggested that Liverpool perhaps missed a trick by not bringing in a centre-back.

The midfield was the main area of concern, with four new faces coming in, but former Premier League goalkeeper Schwarzer thinks that Josko Gvardiol would have been a ‘good option’ as well, as he told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport.

Even though Liverpool declined last season, with the defensive side of their game being the biggest issue, no new faces came in to boost and refresh a backline that has struggled and become error-prone.

And, during the early stages of the new Premier League season, you have to question why.

That’s probably a question for FSG, who have a mixed relationship with the Anfield faithful, as Schwarzer shared his thoughts on Gvardiol.

“I thought Gvardiol was a good option for Liverpool,” said Schwarzer. “But, of course, Manchester City got him.”

The 21-year-old is still pretty raw in his game, but he is a player who is showing huge promise, both on the club and international stage.

That’s why Manchester City paid RB Leipzig £77 million (BBC Sport) for the hard-hitting centre-back, who has already started three games for Pep Guardiola’s side.

You would think that with the likes of Ruben Dias, John Stones, Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji in your ranks, that another big-money centre-back signing isn’t needed, especially after you won the Treble.

Well, in order to go down that road again, then such changes need to be made, even if players like Gvardiol, as of this moment, aren’t needed.
