Mikel Arteta must find an Arsenal replacement for Thomas Partey with the Ghana international struck by injury. The Gunners are set to face Manchester United this afternoon in the Premier League but they must do so without their versatile midfielder, who has been playing at right-back, with it being confirmed he suffered an injury in training.

Arsenal appeared to want to keep quiet about the news, but with the international break coming up, had to provide Ghana with an official reason he cannot be called up. With Chris Hughton’s Black Stars squad confirmed on Saturday, with it came an official statement on the absence of Partey.

The statement read: “According to his club, the player picked up an injury in training and could be on the sidelines for a while, however the Black Stars medical teams is monitoring the situation.” Given his role in the team so far this season, there is no obvious replacement for Partey but it looks set to be a decision between Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Magalhaes, however Arteta has another option in Jorginho.

“Jorgi is a phenomenal character, he has so much experience,” Arteta said about Jorginho in early August when he was linked with an exit. “Everybody respects and loves him, and he is a very particular character as well. He has been really, really, really good for us.

“He needs to maintain what he is doing but as well we have to promote experience from other areas. There are very young players as well and now they have been with us for a while and they have to start to move forwards and take initiative and go another step further, because that is going to needed for sure.

“It’s something that has to be shared. Jorgi’s experience is very important, and then we have to use that and allow them to lead and self-police in certain moments. When it comes from the dressing-room, that’s the most powerful thing.

“We haven’t gone from the end of May to the beginning of August from being young to now being mature. But they are gaining experience and I will never use their age as an excuse because it’s something that really describes who we are and the way we behave and play, and it’s something very powerful.”

Bringing the Italy international into the team would require a slight tactical rethink at the back and in midfield which would likely see Ben White back at right-back and Kai Havertz taken out of the team, however the importance of a holding midfielder against Manchester United is paramount, as Arsenal found out in pre-season.

When facing Erik ten Hag’s side in the USA, Arteta deployed Rice, Havertz and Martin Odegaard as his midfield three, but the dynamic was off against a team also wanting to dominate the ball. Therefore, introducing Jorginho into the midfield will prevent that from happening again and allow Rice to express himself further forward.
