Rob Dorsett: Career advice from a Sky Sports News reporter - Sports Gazette
Derby County are in talks over a deal to sign Sheffield Wednesday striker Michael Smith, reports Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett.

Smith, 31, netted 18 goals in League One last season as Sheffield Wednesday earned promotion via the League One play-offs.

The striker netted 19 in the previous campaign with Rotherham United and has quickly made a name for himself in the third tier, with Derby County now taking a look.

Paul Warne seems keen on a reunion with his former front man, with Dorsett revealing that the Rams are ‘in talks’ with Sheffield Wednesday over a possible deal for Smith.

Derby County are in the market for a new striker with just Conor Washington and James Collins being his only natural no.9s ahead of the new season, following the exit of David McGoldrick at the end of last season.

Wednesday meanwhile are fairly light on strikers themsleves, with the likes of Josh Windass, Lee Gregory, and Ashley Fletcher being the only players who naturally play in that position.

Smith to Derby

Smith is one of Wednesday’s biggest goal threats and so it’s difficult to see the Owls letting him go. But owner Dejphon Chansiri might want to take the money while he can and with there being the Warne connection at Derby, Smith leaving may actually be a fairly realistic outcome.

New boss Xisco Munoz though will surely be desperate to keep Smith ahead of what is going to be a very tough and arduous Championship campaign, with Sheffield Wednesday kicking off proceedings at home to Southampton later tonight.

Smith has become a well-regarded name at League One level and before the summer transfer window is over, he might yet make his return to the third tier.
