Nottingham Forest ready to open talks with Steve Cooper after Chris Hughton is sacked

Nottingham Forest signed Odysseas Vlachodimos on transfer deadline day to bolster their goalkeeping ranks. Now, it’s been explained why Evangelos Marinakis really wanted to sign the custodian this summer.

According to Radar, the Reds pursued the Benfica goalkeeper for some time. It’s now believed that Marinakis was keen to make sure that his Forest squad featured a Greek international in the ranks.

Vlachodimos will compete for a place in the Forest team with Matt Turner. The USA number one also arrived in the summer from Arsenal and he kept his first clean sheet for the club last time out against Chelsea.

It’s fair to say that the Greece number one is more experienced. He’s won titles with Benfica and has been a regular in the team at most of the clubs he’s played for during his career to date.

Vlachodimos made 225 appearances for the Portuguese giants after signing from Greek outfit Panathinaikos. He’s also played 35 times for his country and is now established as the number one.

Report shares why Marinakis really wanted to bring Vlachodimos to Forest

The goalkeeping department was in need of some repair. Dean Henderson departed at the end of his loan; whilst Keylor Navas also headed back to PSG following the end of his temporary deal.

Turner arrived in preparation for the new season starting and he’s played the first four matches. Ethan Horvath has been the backup on the bench but he could leave the club in the near future.

Now, Vlachodimos could really ruffle some feathers. It looks unlikely that he’s come to sit on the bench and as a result, it will be fascinating to see who wins the battle to become the long-term number one at Forest.
