Jürgen: We'll be angry again for West Ham visit - Liverpool FC

Clinton Morrison says he was ‘surprised’ that Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold started at right-back for England.

The 25-year-old isn’t a regular under Gareth Southgate at England, but when he has played in recent times, it has been a midfield position for his country.

Given that the Three Lions were playing Australia in a pre-season friendly, it saw big changes made, with Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins scoring the only goal of the game at Wembley.

It came from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s wicked ball into the box, with Jack Grealish’s shot across the box then being bundled home by Villa’s in-form man.

Clinton Morrison lauded Liverpool’s academy star for the role he played, as he told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (14/10/23 at 2:10 pm).

It will be interesting to see what role Trent Alexander-Arnold will now play as England face off against Italy in a Euro 2024 qualifier.

“It was a great ball from Trent Alexander-Arnold,” said Morrison. “We know Trent can do that.

“I was surprised when he started him at right-back because I thought he would play him in midfield. But those players are quality players and England got the result.”

It hasn’t been the ride the Liverpool man or their fans wanted for their player, who finds himself behind Kyle Walker, Reece James and Kieran Trippier in the pecking order.

That’s a reason why he was used as a number ten previously by Southgate.

Many feel that he should be used a lot more, but perhaps that will come once Southgate leaves because it just hasn’t worked out, in that regard.
