Newcastle braced for lengthy Sandro Tonali ban after betting investigation

Another update has arrived on Sandro Tonali this morning, this time via Sky Sports’ Keith Downie.

He reveals that the midfielder is facing a ‘lengthy ban’ from football after admitting to betting on AC Milan to win matches during his time at the San Siro.

It’s believed this has come as a huge surprise to Newcastle United, who are not commenting on the matter at this stage.

Downie adds that the ‘most severe punishment’ for this misconduct is a worldwide ban from football for THREE years, but the fact Tonali is now cooperating with prosecutors and helping the investigation means a shorter suspension is likely.

A 12-month ban has been suggested by the Italian press this morning. But, either way, it’s a huge blow for the club and real shame for the player himself, who will hopefully receive the help needed to come back stronger in the future.

Here’s the update in full from Sky’s North-East correspondent, Keith Downie:
