Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews has been suspended for two games for cross-checking Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin, the NHL announced Monday. The play happened at the 14:55 mark of the third period of the Heritage Classic on Sunday, a 5-2 Buffalo victory.

Matthews, the NHL’s leading goal scorer with 45 tallies in 56 games, was assessed a two-minute minor penalty for cross-checking at the time.

This is a high, forceful cross-check that makes contact with an opponent’s neck with sufficient force to merit supplemental discipline,” the NHL’s department of player safety said in a video announcing the suspension.

Matthews had not previously been fined, nor suspended in his NHL career. Dahlin finished the game and played 23:35. Matthews’ suspension, based on his average annual salary, will cost him $116,402.50 per the NHL.
