Now, this classic rock icon is bringing his extensive songbook to our local area. Bachman-Turner Overdrive, featuring Randy Bachman, will perform at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY, on September 16, 2024.
Before this highly anticipated show, we had the opportunity to sit down with Randy Bachman to discuss what fans can expect and reflect on a remarkable career that began in Winnipeg, Canada, in the 1960s.
Ethan: Have you stayed in touch with Burton Cummings?
Randy: “Yeah, we spoke yesterday.”
Lou: Wow, after so many years that relationship is still good, huh?
Randy: “Yes, I remember when I said to my Dad, did you go to school with Burton Cummings’ mother? He said yeah, Rhoda Cummings. I said, can you give her a call and see if I can meet with her son? I want him to join The Guess Who. So my Dad called Rhoda Cummings and setup a meeting and I went over to her house. Burton was 17 at the time and she said I’ll let him join your band but he’s underage I won’t let him sign the contract unless you promise to pick him up before the gig and bring him home after the gig, I don’t want him going to any wild parties. She said you’re an older brother, I had three younger brothers and I said OK. So we did that, he joined The Guess Who and he’s still singing. He’s got one of the greatest voices in Rock & Roll.”

Lou: What can our fans expect if they come out to your show in Portchester, NY?
Randy: “Well, it’s kind of a retrospective evening, it’s a journey through time. I go back to being a teenager in Winnipeg in the middle-60s where the bands in town were the band I was in, which became The Guess Who. Neil Young & The Squires, Burton Cummings and the Deverons, Fred Turner and the Rockin’ Devils and then I went on to be in B.T.O with Fred Turner and play with Neil Young and Burton Cummings and the Deverons were still together and playing and Rocking and rolling. So, I start with Shakin’ all Over which was our first hit in 1964. That’s how we got our name The Guess Who, and then I go through every song I’ve written and played on, No Sugar Tonight, American Woman, Let it Ride, Hey You, Takin’ Care of Business, You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet, Rollin’ Down the Highway, Let it Ride, it’s a whole evening. Then, my son Tal Bachman he’s now in the band, he does his big hit She’s So High which is a hit from the 90s so we have a pretty darn good show.”
