The presidential race is on for the International Olympic Committee which will announce the list of candidates to succeed current chair Thomas Bach on Monday after the German declined to fulfil a third term as head of the organisation.

Lord Sebastian Coe is the front runner in the race. The Briton 67, the current president of World Athletics, was one of seven approved candidates announced by the IOC on Monday for the election on March 2023. Lord Coe is expected to win 111 IOC members, a long with Spaniard Juan Antonio Samaranch and Zimbabwean former swimmer Kirtsty Coventry. There are 206 IOC members Committees and with the numbers, it’s favourable for the Briton Lord Coe.

The elevation of Lord Coe to the IOC presidency will open an opportunity for an African to take the chairmanship of the World Athletics. The elevation of Mr. Jackson Tuwei of Kenya who is the current vice president to the presidency of World Athletics would have been the most sensible choice at the moment. The world athletics congress African charter has the numbers to vote on of their own to the pinnacle of World Athletics. An African presidency would advocate for more infrastructure development, more races in the continental and finally host the world athletics championships in Africa something that has never happened before.

Good Luck Lord Coe
