Billy Napier explains decision not to go for two and the win late against Tennessee
A pivotal moment.
One of the biggest decisions of Saturday night’s Tennessee-Florida game came late with just seconds left on the clock. Florida, fresh off of DJ Lagway’s touchdown strike to make it 17-16, appeared set to go for the two-point conversion and the win.
Florida coach Billy Napier sent out his offense, quickly motioning out his entire offensive line to form a swinging gate formation. Josh Heupel wanted no part of it and instantly called a timeout.
Napier, who was clearly only interested in running that particular play, pivoted out of the timeout and kicked the extra point to ultimately send the game to overtime.
The Gators would go on to lose yards on their only drive of overtime, then missed their field goal attempt.
Tennessee went on to score a game-winning Touchdown on the next possession.
“We had a play that we felt good about and then obviously they burned their timeout,” Napier said of the situation after the game. “I think we felt from the three there, we were playing pretty good on both sides of our team at that point in time so we thought, ‘Let’s go play overtime.
Let’s go give our guys a chance to play some more plays.’ I thought defensively, we kept ourself in it. Wasn’t quite ready to do that at that point in time.”
