Graham Mertz’s Surprising Transfer to Penn State Shakes Up College Football

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the college football community, former five-star quarterback Graham Mertz has announced his transfer to Penn State University. This decision comes after a distinguished tenure at the University of Florida, where Mertz showcased his exceptional talent and leadership on the field.

A Stellar Career at Florida

Mertz’s journey to Florida began in December 2022 when he transferred from the University of Wisconsin. At Florida, he quickly established himself as a formidable quarterback, leading the Gators to several significant victories. In the 2024 season, Mertz achieved a remarkable 76.6% completion rate, underscoring his precision and consistency.

However, Mertz’s promising season was abruptly halted in October 2024 due to a torn ACL sustained during an overtime loss to Tennessee. This injury sidelined him for the remainder of the season, leading to speculation about his future in college football.

The Transfer to Penn State

Despite the setback, Mertz’s decision to transfer to Penn State has been met with widespread acclaim. His leadership qualities and on-field performance have made him a highly sought-after quarterback. Penn State’s coaching staff expressed enthusiasm about adding Mertz to their roster, highlighting his potential to elevate the team’s performance in the upcoming season.

Impact on College Football

Mertz’s transfer to Penn State is expected to have significant implications for the Big Ten Conference. His experience and skill set are anticipated to bolster Penn State’s offense, making them a formidable contender in the conference. Rival teams are now reassessing their strategies in light of this development, recognizing the enhanced competitiveness that Mertz brings to the field.

Looking Ahead

As Mertz prepares to join Penn State, both fans and analysts are eager to see how his addition will influence the team’s dynamics and performance. His journey from Wisconsin to Florida and now to Penn State exemplifies the dynamic nature of college football, where talent and opportunity converge to shape the future of the sport.

Carter, who is a potential No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, could have surgery to fix the issue, Rapoport added.

“There are mixed opinions on whether he needs surgery, and we will figure that out in the near future,” Rosenhaus said Wednesday.

According to Carter’s representation, the Penn State product has two options.

First, he could have the pre-emptive surgery and have a screw inserted in his right foot. The expected time for recovery would be eight weeks, per Rosenhaus.

The second option is for Carter to bypass the surgery and work out in front of scouts at Penn State’s pro day on March 28. This decision would prove to NFL teams that he doesn’t need the surgery.

Carter, his family and agents Robert Bailey and Rosenhaus spent Wednesday consulting with doctors to gather more information. A decision about what Carter will do is expected this week, Rosenhaus said.

“Either way, worst case scenario, we don’t expect this to impact where he is drafted,” Rosenhaus said. “After visiting with teams this week, I believe he’s going to be the No. 1 overall pick.”

The news of Carter is unfortunate after the Penn State defender told reporters on Wednesday morning that he wanted to be the No. 1 overall pick in April’s draft.

Carter recorded 68 tackles, 24 tackles for loss, 12 sacks and two forced fumbles in 2024 for the Nittany Lions.
