WVU Baseball right-handed pitcher Gavin Van Kempen elected to enter the transfer portal on Tuesday, June 10, per a post from his Twitter account.

Van Kempen, a rising senior, who stands 6-foot-6 and can hit the mid 90s with his fastball, spent the past three seasons with the Mountaineers but saw his playing time table off. Beginning the 2025 season as a weekend starter after a strong showing as a reliever the previous season, Van Kempen posted a 6.13 ERA across 39.2 innings (13 starts). He fell out of the main rotation at the beginning of May.

The big right-hander never found a settled niche with WVU Baseball, bouncing between the rotation, service as a long reliever and as a setup man. He earned an MLB Draft nod out of high school as the St. Louis Cardinals selected him in the 20th round of the 2022 MLB Draft, but Van Kempen elected to stick to his commitment to West Virginia instead.

He’ll end his Mountaineers career as a critical depth piece on some of the best teams in program history.
