Dawn Staley Honors Civil Rights Icon After Final Regular Season Victory — Coach’s Off‑Court Move Gets Attention

When the final buzzer sounded on the South Carolina Gamecocks’ regular season, it wasn’t just another win on the board — it marked the end of a remarkable 29‑2 campaign. Their head coach, Dawn Staley, guided her team to a 60‑56 victory over the Kentucky Wildcats, securing yet another strong finish as they prepare for postseason play.

But Staley’s most talked‑about moment came off the court, drawing widespread attention for its heartfelt significance. Instead of joining her team’s celebration, she chose to pay tribute to a fellow South Carolinian who shaped the nation’s civil rights legacy.

Walking With History

Shortly after the Gamecocks’ victory, Staley appeared in a solemn procession at the South Carolina State House, honoring the late Rev. Jesse Jackson — a native of Greenville and one of the most influential civil rights leaders of his generation. Images from the event showed Staley dressed in black, walking alongside Jackson’s family, friends, and fellow activists as his casket was carried into the State House. 

Her presence was a powerful statement of respect, solidarity, and connection to her roots. It served as a reminder that leadership, for Staley, extends far beyond the basketball court and into the community and history she represents.

Following Jackson’s passing on February 17, Staley had already taken to social media to express her admiration. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), she shared a heartfelt tribute: “May Reverend Jesse Jackson’s soul rest in peace and love! Peace and love to his loved ones and the people he served.”
