Sheffield Wednesday ‘in talks’ over deal for Huddersfield Town-linked Aston Villa man Tommi O’Reilly

Sheffield Wednesday have been credited with interest in a playmaker previously linked with Huddersfield Town

Sheffield Wednesday have reportedly entered discussions with Aston Villa over a loan deal for playmaker Tommi O’Reilly.

The 22-year-old has found first-team opportunities limited at Villa Park, but enjoyed a successful 2025/26 season away from the club on loan at Crewe Alexandra. He appeared in all 46 of the club’s League Two games, registering seven goals and 12 assists.

A raft of clubs were linked with O’Reilly in the build-up to the summer transfer window, including Huddersfield Town, Bolton Wanderers and Portsmouth.

Wednesday are the latest club to have been credited with interest, with Football League World having claimed the Owls are in talks.

The League One club have already done business with Villa twice this summer, signing defender Sil Swinkels and winger Louie Barry on permanent deals.

Their pre-existing relationship could prove handy if they make a move for O’Reilly, a player who will undoubtedly have attracted interest from elsewhere.

Tommi O’Reilly tipped for future above League Two

In April, Crewe boss Lee Bell conceded there was “not a chance” O’Reilly or fellow loanee Emre Tezgel would be returning to the Railwaymen.

He told BBC Radio Stoke: “If one of them could come back to this club, I’d snap your hand off, but there’s not a chance.

“I’d be very surprised to see them playing in League Two ever again – not until they get about 35 and they’re winding down. No, we definitely won’t be able to get them. I’ll try, but there’s no chance.”

The centre of midfield has been area of focus for Wednesday, who have signed Billy Mitchell, Callum Slattery and Barry Bannan this summer.

O’Reilly could play in front of the midfield as a ‘10’, but is equally comfortable out on the flank. Last season, he was primarily used down the right-hand side by Crewe.
