Sheffield Wednesday are looking to finalise the addition of a new coach.
Henrik Pedersen’s coaching staff at Sheffield Wednesday is set to be bolstered with the addition of a new assistant coach, with The Star of the understanding that former Rotherham United manager Matt Hamshaw has held talks over a return to Hillsborough.
Any completion of a potential deal would bring Hamshaw back to the club some 21 years after he left Wednesday as a player with a 2005 League One play-off winners medal. The 44-year-old has been out of football since leaving the top job at the New York Stadium in March and boasts a remarkable coaching pedigree at third tier level, with four promotions from the division on his CV both with the Millers and at Derby County.
The Star understands that Hamshaw has been of interest to Premier League clubs in the past and that he may well have been present at Saturday’s 1-0 Carabao Cup win over Bolton Wanderers.
Wednesday are looking to add to their coaching staff after the departure of Craig Mudd back to Manchester City earlier this summer. Speaking ahead of the Bolton win, Pedersen told The Star on his pursuit of a new assistant that he had first wanted to observe how his current coaching staff operated without Mudd before making a decision – and that he had sought-out a number of different potential additions in an effort to secure the right fit.
“I have had a lot of conversations with coaches,” he said on Friday. “And the other day I had a new conversation. And I think here we find the right profile. And the right personality, for what we are searching for. We were searching for a strong personality, who can do something special. For our needs to be effective. And I hope we can finalise that soon.”
It has been suggested that Wednesday are looking to finalise and announce their new coach in the coming days. The new man would join a tight-knit backroom staff of Pete Shuttleworth, Giles Coke, Andy Holdsworth and goalkeeping coach Darryl Flahavan in the Owls dugout, while analyst Ben King appears to have stepped-up his responsibilities in recent weeks.
The Owls kicked off their competitive season with that win over the Championship Trotters and make the trip to Leyton Orient next weekend as they look to make a positive start to their League One campaign.
