After signing a 10-year, $341 million contract, David Peterson quickly became the face of New York Mets…..
The Mets continue their 10-game road trip on Tuesday in Arizona as they take on the red-hot Diamondbacks for three games.
Prior to the game, manager Carlos Mendoza spoke to the media about the team and some of his players…
David Peterson to pitch Thursday
After Paul Blackburn was placed on the IL this past weekend, the Mets will need to call up a starter from the minors to fill his spot when his spot comes around.
With the day off Monday, the Mets could have used this opportunity to push back those already in the rotation and give them extra rest. Mendoza revealed that they will not be doing that and instead have slated Peterson to pitch Thursday in their series finale against the D-backs.
Peterson will pitch on regular rest instead of extra if he were to be slotted for Friday’s series opener against the Chicago White Sox.
Mendoza was asked about the decision on when to pitch Peterson and said that there are several factors.
“A little bit of everything,” Mendoza said. “Keeping him fresher, the way he bounced back after the last outing. Some of the left-handed hitters that [the Diamondbacks] have. It’s a little bit of everything.”
In his last start, the 28-year-old allowed just one run over 7.1 innings against the Padres on Saturday night.
Who will be Friday’s starter?
Mendoza was asked directly whether Tylor Megill will be called up to pitch Friday and the first-year skipper said the organization wasn’t ready to announce who it is just yet.
He was asked what goes into the decision and Mendoza said that they have to make sure all of the options are in a “good spot” physically after their latest starts in the minors and bullpen sessions.
Megill is the only pitcher on the 40-man roster who has been stretched out like a starter so it is likely the Mets bring their tall righty back for Friday’s start.
