Louisville Courier

Louisville women’s basketball is ranked 17th in the USA TODAY Preseason Poll, which was released Thursday. The team was also ranked 17th in the AP preseason poll Oct. 15.

U of L is one of six ACC teams in the poll, which includes Notre Dame (No. 5), N.C. State (No. 8), Duke (No. 11), North Carolina (No. 16) and Florida State (No. 19). Fellow conference mates Stanford, Virginia Tech, California and Miami received votes.

The Cardinals went 24-10 last season and didn’t win a first-round NCAA Tournament game for the first time under 18th-year head coach Jeff Walz. They return two full-time starters in post players Olivia Cochran and Nyla Harris. U of L also returns veteran guards Merissah Russell and Jayda Curry.

Louisville signed the No. 6 high school recruiting class in the country in 2024. The eight-player group includes five-star prospects Imari Berry, Mackenly Randolph and Tajianna Roberts, all of whom ranked in the top 25 of the 2024 espnW HoopGurlz Recruiting rankings.

Louisville added one player from the portal: Ja’Leah Williams. The Miami transfer guard was brought in to be a defensive stopper for the Cardinals, an area in which they struggled a year ago. U of L ranked seventh in the ACC in scoring defense (63.3 points per game) and 11th in field-goal percentage defense (41.6%).

U of L opens the 2024-25 season against sixth-ranked UCLA in the Aflac Oui Play event on Nov. 4 in Paris.
