The Texas men’s tennis team fell just short of its second national championship Sunday after a wrenching 4-3 loss to Big 12 rival TCU at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Okla.
After TCU claimed the doubles point and the first singles contest, the Longhorns rallied with wins by freshman Gilles-Arnaud Bailly on the No. 2 line, senior Cleeve Harper at No. 6 and senior No. 5 Micah Braswell at No. 2 to take a 3-2 lead.
Texas tennis player Micah Braswell won his singles match in Sunday’s team tennis national title dual match against TCU, but the Longhorns fell 4-3. Braswell returned to the courts in individual competition Monday.
But that advantage proved tenuous with the two remaining matches in third sets. TCU tied the match 3-3 with Jack Pinnington’s 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Eliot Spizzirri on the No. 1 singles line and then claimed the NCAA title when Sebastian Gorzny edged Texas’ Jonah Braswell 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 on the No. 5 line.
“I’m so proud of this team and hurt for them because they wanted it so badly,” Texas coach Bruce Berque said. “The margins are super small, and tonight was no different. It’s going to hurt, and there’s nothing you can do to take that away, but I’m sure when the dust settles, they’ll be able to look back and be proud of what they did together. We did a lot, and most importantly these guys will have these relationships and these memories together forever.”
Texas (27-4) finished the year with the second-most wins in a season for the program since 2010 while reaching its fourth Final Four in the last five years. It was the fourth time this season that the Longhorns and Horned Frogs had squared off. TCU won their Big 12 dual match 4-3 in Fort Worth on March 2, then Texas swept TCU 5-0 in Austin on March 24, and the Longhorns swept the Frogs again 4-0 in the Big 12 finals on April 21.
The Longhorns return to Stillwater’s courts on Monday and Tuesday for the NCAA singles and doubles championships. Spizzirri, Micah Braswell, Bailly and Jonah Braswell all competed in
