2024-2025 Returning back to Texas is the best wishes for me say.David Ashet welcome
Watson’s words jibe with that sentiment as Beck is listed as the No. 3 tight end, meaning he should see some action against North Texas.
“Natural ball catcher, functional speed is outstanding, speed for his position is outstanding and he learns football,” Watson said of Beck. “He’s up to speed with where everyone is right now and he was that way a week ago, so he learns football.”
3. DeSoto head coach Claude Mathis couldn’t have been happier than when he found out Marcus Hutchins had earned the starting left tackle spot against North Texas. Mathis said there have been plenty of times in Hutchins’ career when he thought about giving up football, but Mathis said the best thing about Hutchins emerging from player left for dead to a starter in the opener is that it’s a test to what mental toughness can do for a player.
In this edition of The Weekly Six-Pack we’ll give some more team nuggets leading up to the kickoff of the Texas Longhorns’ season opener against North Texas. How is David Ash going to protect himself? Who does Shawn Watson like at tight end? What do you need to know about some of the depth chart surprises? We’ll answer those questions and more.
Taking a big hit isn’t something Ash spends his time worrying about, but he promises to be more careful this season.
1. For those wondering what David Ash is doing to protect himself from another concussion, prepare to be disappointed if you were hoping he’d go above and beyond when taking precautions. Ash said this week that he’s going to wear the same helmet he had last year and won’t change anything with his equipment.
He said there’s new technology available, but he wasn’t interested in being the guinea pig. That said, if does take a good lick against North Texas he’s convinced himself that he’s going to be alright.
His self-confidence won’t make Longhorn feel better when the offense is on the field against the Mean Green, but at least Ash will be sure of himself in his first action since Sept. 21 of last year.
“Don’t hold your breath for too long,” Ash said. “If I get hit I’ll be fine. I will be sliding a lot more this season, you can count on that, and I’ll be trying to protect myself and not be selfish that way.”
2. Shawn Watson loves using his tight ends. In Watson’s nine years calling plays in the Big 12 at Colorado and Nebraska his tight ends combined to average more than 42 catches per season and he used them a lot at Louisville with a Cardinal tight end being on the receiving end of a Teddy Bridgewater pass 28 times in 2012 and 43 times last season.
Perhaps Geoff Swaim has a big year catching the football, but if he’s still just a really good blocker and that’s it, that might not bother Watson too much. He likes what he has in M.J. McFarland and it sounds like he’s planning on getting something from the fourth-year tight end this season.
“His heart and soul is into what we’re doing,” Watson said. “He serves a vital role because of all he’s able to do.”
The player Watson is really excited about is true freshman Andrew Beck. On the sixth day of camp the coaches moved him to the offensive side of the ball where sources told Horns247 he was looking like a potential answ
er at the position.
