Wide receiver Ryan Williams and cornerback Jaylen Mbakwe landed in Tuscaloosa this offseason as the two highest-rated members of Alabama’s celebrated 2024 freshman class. The former five-star prospects admitted there are negatives to being a campus celebrity and recently shared a couple of troublesome encounters they had with Crimson Tide fans this summer.
“I had ordered from Wingstop and didn’t feel like going and getting it,” Mbakwe said on the first episode of his new podcast with Williams, New Wave Podcast. “I had to DoorDash it. I go downstairs to get it. I get outside and the lady is like, ‘Your name is Jaylen. My son’s name is Jaylen, too.’ We stand there for 10-15 minutes, taking videos and talking. She tried to hold me hostage. She asked Ryan what his name was, and he told her he was a walk-on. The next day, she messaged me and said, ‘Tell Ryan the next time y’all want some Wingstop, I’ll bring it to y’all for free.’ It was crazy.”
Williams said he’s had a hard time moving freely around campus at times. He shared that a routine trip from Alabama’s football facilities in the summer cost him part of his day after a group of cheerleaders swarmed him despite politely brushing them off
