Following the end of the regular season in 2023, the Ohio State Buckeyes’ future situation became somewhat uncertain when Kyle McCord opted to enter the transfer portal.

On Dec. 17, McCord transferred to Syracuse where he spent one season before now preparing for the NFL draft. Now in the rearview, the decision was best for both Ohio State and McCord.

McCord was the starter for 12 games in 2023 and appeared in 24 total games over three seasons. In a recent interview with The Podcast, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day briefly spoke on McCord leaving.

“The Kyle McCord situation was a difficult [situation]. Guys on this team and myself, we love Kyle … he was a huge part of this team, so that situation was not easy for anybody,” Day explained.

On paper, McCord had a solid year with 3,170 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and just six interceptions thrown. However, McCord was limited as a runner with -65 rushing yards when factoring in sack yards. The former Ohio State starter threw two interceptions against Michigan in his final game with the Buckeyes.

McCord opted to transfer before the bowl game and Ohio State went with Devin Brown as the starter in the loss to Missouri.

At Syracuse, the former highly-touted recruit improved a bit in 2024 in terms of production. McCord threw for 4,779 passing yards, 34 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. Now, McCord is expected to hear his name called in the NFL draft in April.

Ohio State went on to win a National Championship in 2024 with Howard as the starter who replaced McCord. Surely, neither side would change a thing about how it worked out. Still, it also wasn’t easy departing Columbus after three seasons together
