Steve Harris explained why neither Iron Maiden nor British Lion have ever used backing tracks.

In an interview with Jaimunji, Harris discussed the little mistakes all musicians make on stage and how backing tracks change the magic of the live show.

The Iron Maiden founder noted that neither Iron Maiden nor British Lion have ever used backing tracks, because they make the songs rigid, instead of flowing & flexible (transcribed by Ultimate Guitar):

“We’ve never used backing tracks with either band. The songs like to move. They move up and down a little bit here and there, light and shade and stuff. It’s not rigid, like with a backing track. We’ve never used it.”

Harris continued, recounting a funny story from a live show in Leeds:

“That’s why it made me laugh at one point where I actually fell over on stage in Leeds during the ‘Stranger in A Strange Land’ but because I was playing an open E, I still was able to carry on in it.”

“And people thought, ‘Oh, he didn’t cut out. He must be playing the backing tracks.’ Well, I’ve never played a backing track, but I managed to get myself up a bit sharpish anyway, but I was just playing open E.”

“It wasn’t really a problem, but it probably sounded a bit more complicated. They probably never heard it cut out.”
