Breaking News: Isaiah Taylor announce full commitment with Texas tech over auburn and Texas longhorns welcome to Texas tech….

The Texas Tech football team has hired the first of two new coaches to lead the Red Raider secondary.

Tech announced Friday the hiring of Rob Greene as the team’s new safeties coach. Greene will be reunited with new Texas Tech defensive coordinator Shiel Wood after the pair served on staffs together at Wofford in 2017 and Tulane in 2023.

Greene served as a defensive analyst for Tulane during the 2024 season, focusing on the safeties.

Marcel Yates, who served as Texas Tech’s secondary coach, was fired in December. Texas Tech will now be splitting Yates’ former duties into two separate positions, the first being filled by Greene. A new cornerbacks coach will also be hired, that announcement expected in the coming weeks.

“Coach Greene has a strong familiarity with Coach Wood and our new defensive scheme, making him a perfect fit to join our staff,” Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire said in the news release. “He has significant experience as both a defensive backs coach and as a defensive coordinator both from his time at Wofford and at Tulane. We’re excited to welcome him and his family to Texas Tech.”

During his two years at Tulane, Greene was part of a defensive unit that led the American Athletic Conference in turnovers gained (27) and interceptions (17) during the 2023 campaign, which ranked third and fourth in the nation, respectively. The Green Wave were 16th in the country in rush defense, 23rd in scoring defense and 36th in total defense that season with Wood and Greene working together.

This past season, Tulane’s defense was among the top units in the country, ranking 15th in passing yards allowed, 23rd in total defense and 24th in total defense while producing six defensive touchdowns.

Greene spent six years as an assistant at Wofford prior to his time at Tulane. He served as a defensive assistant coach focusing on cornerbacks, defensive backs and safeties. He was also the team’s defensive coordinator from 2020 to 2022.
