The duo, affectionately called “Sonic and Knuckles” by head coach Dan Campbell due to Gibbs’ speed burst and Montgomery’s powerful running style combined for 1,960 rushing yards during the 2023 season, the highest amount of any running back duo in the NFL.

Montgomery understands why NFL teams often utilize the running back by committee system due to its ability of keeping players healthy. However, he does believe the duo’s tremendous success is leading teams to mimicking their “script.”

 

The Detroit Lions should be in good hands entering the 2025 season.

 

While the Lions ended the 2024 campaign in a disappointing fashion after losing their first playoff game as the No. 1 seed, they have arguably the NFL’s best running back duo in Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. Gibbs is coming off of a monster Pro Bowl year after posting 1,412 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns, leading the NFL with 20 total touchdowns scored.

Meanwhile, Montgomery is coming off of another solid campaign after rushing for 12 touchdowns despite missing three regular season games at the end of the year due to an MCL injury.

 

“I think it just lessens the tread on the tires,” says Montgomery in a one-on-one interview on why their running back duo works so well. “The best ability is availability. We want to be available for our team as often and as well as we can be. Jahmyr and I being who we are, kind of complimenting each other so well, I think it makes it easier for us to do it.”
