Jaylen Key is an American football safety currently playing for the Cincinnati Bengals in the NFL. Born on February 29, 2000, in Washington, D.C., he stands 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 210 pounds.

 

Early Life and Education

Key grew up in Quincy, Florida, and attended Amos P. Godby High School, where he played both defensive back and wide receiver. He was rated as the No. 51 player in Florida and helped his team achieve an 11-2 record. He committed to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) for his college football career.

College Career

 

UAB Blazers (2018โ€“2022):

 

Key played in 43 games over his five seasons with UAB, recording 74 total tackles, including 3.5 for loss and one sack. He also had two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, five pass breakups, and three interceptions. In his senior year (2022), he earned Honorable Mention All-Conference USA honors after leading the team with 60 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, and three interceptions.

 

Alabama Crimson Tide (2023):

 

After transferring to Alabama, Key started all 12 games in the 2023 season. He recorded 60 tackles, including 1.5 for loss, and added a pass deflection and an interception. His performance contributed to Alabama’s SEC Championship and a berth in the College Football Playoff.

 

Professional Career

 

New York Jets (2024):

 

Key was selected by the New York Jets with the final pick (No. 257) in the 2024 NFL Draft, earning the title “Mr. Irrelevant.” He spent time on the Jets’ practice squad during the 2024 season.

 

Cincinnati Bengals (2024โ€“Present):

 

On December 17, 2024, Key signed with the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad. He signed a reserve/future contract with the team on January 7, 2025.
