The addition of Gasol gave Bryant a championship-caliber running mate. The trade was supposed to put the Lakers back into the mix for a championship and that is exactly what happened.
In Gasol’s first season in Los Angeles, the Lakers managed to go back to the NBA Finals for the first time since the 2004 playoffs, which caused them to fall apart in the first place. Unfortunately for them, 2008 was not their year.
The Lakers lost the 2008 NBA Finals to the Boston Celtics in six games. Kevin Garnett got his famous, “Anything is Possible,” soundbite out of it.
Gronkowski lamented that the four-time NBA champion never tried out for the NFL and went on to praise James’s “freak” athletic qualities.
“LeBron would have been an absolute monster on the football field,” Gronkowski said. “I can kind of see him being like the hybrid F tight end. He’s just so tall, but he’s got the athleticism to pull off the F position. I don’t see him being a true wide [receiver], throwing himself at defensive ends, D-ends that are like 280, 290, I don’t see him doing that, but I see him blocking the linebackers, blocking the safeties when needed. But also just dominating in the pass game, I mean, he’s a freak of an athlete… I just wanted to see his athleticism translated to the football field.”

The Los Angeles Lakers will return to the court on Tuesday evening to start their 2024-25 regular season when they take on the Minnesota Timberwolves at Crypto.com Arena. They’re hoping this season will go better than last season did, when they finished a disappointing 47-35 and lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Denver Nuggets.
They didn’t sign a single free agent other than center Christian Koloko, whom they gave a two-way contract to, and they didn’t make any trades. However, rookie wing Dalton Knecht could make an impact, and of course, much attention has been focused on rookie guard Bronny James, the son of 39-year-old LeBron James.
Los Angeles also has a new head coach in JJ Redick, former NBA sharpshooter who used to co-host the “Mind the Game” podcast along with the elder James.
