When I first moved to Birmingham from Tennessee in 1989, everyone was honking at me. I got out of the car several times, thinking I had a flat tire. Then I discovered it was my allegiance to the enemy with my Tennessee tags.
The Alabama and Tennessee football rivalry is much like that of the Giants and the Eagles, or the Jets and the Patriots – fierce and in the blood. When someone is born in Alabama, they put an Alabama football beanie on their head, along with a Tennessee diaper. (Ok, I made that one up, but those two teams’ fans would do that!).
During my time in Birmingham, there was God up in the sky somewhere, and Nick Saban down on earth. The coach took over the Alabama football team in 2007, quickly becoming legendary and almost as dear as Paul “Bear”
Bryant.
