Breaking news:5 ⭐ Tyler Onyedim decommit Flip Miami hurricanes over Texas A&M Aggies welcome to Miami hurricanes
Texas A&M is amassing yet another impressive transfer portal haul this winter as Mike Elko looks to improve on an 8-5 season in his first campaign. The Aggies have now made another impact addition at a position of need.
Iowa State transfer defensive lineman Tyler Onyedim is heading to Texas A&M marking a return to the Lone Star State for him. Onyedim, a Richmond, Texas native, chose the Cyclones coming out of high school over several other offers including from the likes of Boston College, Colorado State, FIU, Grambling State, Hawaii, Houston Christian, Incarnate Word, Lamar, Nevada, New Mexico, North Texas, UNLV and several others. At the time he was rated as the No. 151 defensive lineman and No. 199 prospect in Texas as a member of the 2021 class.
He developed into a key contributor for Matt Campbell though as a multi-year starter that was also an All-Big 12 honorable mention performer in 2023. In fact coming into the season, Campbell delivered high praise for Onyedim and the impact he had on the Cyclones program.
“I think Tyler Onyedim has a chance to be one of the great defensive linemen that we’ve had here at Iowa State,” Campbell said during Big 12 media days.
He backed that up with a solid season where he totaled 33 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, four quarterback hurries and one pass broken up. This was coming off a junior season where he had a career 42 tackles with two sacks, 6.5 tackles for a loss and nine quarterback hurries.
Onyedim’s addition fills a key need moving forward for Texas A&M. DJ Hicks and Albert Regis started the Aggies bowl game against USC and both are expected to be key contributors next season. Behind them though, A&M was badly in need of more depth at the position heading into next year and Onyedim begins to answer that question. The Aggies could look to make multiple additions out of the portal with Washington State transfer David Gusta visiting alongside Onyedim while former Top247 defensive lineman Dealyn Evans could be in line to see an increased role next season.
