Former Wisconsin defensive back Xavier Lucas left the school for Miami on Wednesday, according to Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger.
Lucas signed a revenue-sharing contract with the Badgers, as they previously refused to enter him into the portal despite requesting a transfer (via Dellenger).
He made the move by withdrawing from classes at Wisconsin and enrolling academically at Miami, presumably bypassing NCAA transfer rules by not formally signing with the Hurricanes.
Per Dellenger, Lucas’ attorney had planned to file suit against both the NCAA and Wisconsin over antitrust claims related to the situation and accused Wisconsin of blatantly violating NCAA rules by not inserting the defensive back’s name into the pWhen discussing the greatest defensive player of all time, names that are often thrown around in that conversation today include Lawrence Taylor and Aaron Donald for their ability to be disruptive and get after the quarterback. On the topic of defensive backs that could make that case, former Miami Hurricane and NFL Hall of Famer Ed Reed is at the top of that list for his ball-hawking abilities, which saw him haul in eight or more interceptions in three seasons.
Now with his NFL career in the past and still trying to be a part of football, Reed hasn’t had the most orthodox path to climbing the coaching ranks in football. After finishing his NFL career with the New York Jets in 2013, he joined the Buffalo Bills staff as an assistant defensive backs coach in 2016.
After only spending a season in Buffalo, he returned to his alma mater, Miami, where he served in an administrative role for the football team from 2020-2022. After that, he agreed to be the head coach of Bethune-Cookman in 2023, but negotiations fell through, ending that opportunity. Today, Reed has been announced as the offensive coordinator for Chamblee High School in Georgia.
While not many, Chamblee High School has three NFL alum, with the most notable being Steve Wallace who won three Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers and earned Second Team All-Pro in 1992 at offensive tackle.
Despite not being in college or the pros, the offensive coordinator role will be the most prominent coaching position Reed has held up to this point. Even though Reed’s background is as a defensive back, having someone as accomplished and knowledgeable of the game as him will only improve the situation for Chamblee who finished with a 2-9 record this past season.
Now after almost a decade away from a coaching role, Reed will get his chance to earn some valuable experience and provide high school players with mentorship from one of the best to ever play.ortal.Schools have 48 hours to enter a player’s name into the portal after receiving notice of their intent to transfer, and the player cannot enter their own name (via Nick Schultz of On3.com).
Lucas appeared in 12 games with the Badgers during the 2024 season, recording 18 tackles, two tackles for loss, two passes defensed and one interception.
He was a 4-star prospect who ranked as the No. 35 safety in the 2024 recruiting class, per 247Sports’ composite rankings.
Lucas detailed Wisconsin’s refusal to enter his name into the portal in a Dec. 27 post on social media.
