In an unexpected offseason move, 3-star offensive lineman Michael Grant has officially announced his departure from the Oklahoma Sooners football program. The rising junior took to social media on Wednesday to share the news, expressing frustration with his current situation in Norman and a desire to explore new opportunities.

“After much thought and reflection, I have decided to enter the transfer portal and move on from Oklahoma,” Grant wrote. “This wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe it’s the best one for my future. I want to thank Coach [Brent] Venables and the entire staff for their support during my time here. I’m excited for what’s next.”

Sources close to the program indicate that Grant had grown increasingly unhappy with his role on the depth chart. After redshirting his freshman year, he saw limited action last season, primarily contributing on special teams and late-game situations. Despite putting in strong work during spring practices, Grant reportedly felt he was not given a fair shot at competing for a starting spot on the offensive line heading into the fall.

At 6-foot-5 and 305 pounds, Grant was originally a highly regarded 3-star prospect coming out of high school in Texas. Known for his size, agility, and raw strength, he attracted offers from multiple Power Five programs before ultimately committing to Oklahoma.

Now, with two years of eligibility remaining, Grant will look to reignite his college career elsewhere. Several Group of Five schools and mid-tier Power Five programs are already expressing interest, with his blend of experience and potential seen as a valuable addition.

For the Sooners, Grant’s exit creates an unexpected gap in an already thin second unit on the offensive line. While the starting five remains largely intact, depth and injury insurance will be a concern as Oklahoma prepares for a challenging Big 12 slate this fall.

Coach Venables and his staff have not yet issued an official comment but are expected to continue scouring the transfer portal for reinforcements. With the portal still active, Oklahoma could look to bring in a late addition or elevate one of its younger linemen to fill the void left by Grant’s departure.

For now, Grant is focused on finding a new home where he can maximize his potential on the field. “I’m grateful for my time at Oklahoma, but it’s time for a new chapter,” he wrote. “I’m ready to work and prove what I can do.”
