Early Life and Playing Career
Spurrier was born on April 20, 1945, in Miami Beach, Florida. He grew up in Tennessee and played football, baseball, and basketball in high school. Spurrier attended the University of Florida, where he played quarterback and won the Heisman Trophy in 1966.
Coaching Career
Spurrier began his coaching career in 1978 as a quarterbacks coach at Duke University. He later became the head coach at Duke (1987-1989) and then at the University of Florida (1990-2001), where he led the Gators to six Southeastern Conference (SEC) championships and a national championship in 1996.
Professional Coaching Career
Spurrier also coached in the National Football League (NFL), serving as the head coach of the Washington Redskins (2002-2003).
Return to College Football
Spurrier returned to college football in 2005, becoming the head coach at the University of South Carolina. He led the Gamecocks to several bowl games and three bowl victories before retiring in 2015.
Legacy
Steve Spurrier is widely regarded as one of the greatest college football coaches of all time. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2017 and has won numerous coaching awards, including the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award.
