South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley has addressed the unusual court conditions and roster situation ahead of the Gamecocks’ historic outdoor exhibition against College of Charleston.
The game is scheduled for September 27 at Credit One Stadium in Charleston, where a basketball court has been constructed over the stadium’s usual tennis courts. It will be the first outdoor game in South Carolina women’s basketball history.
Staley acknowledged that court conditions are a major concern, particularly because weather could affect the playing surface. She said the team will have the opportunity to observe the court during the earlier games before making any necessary decisions, emphasizing that player safety remains the priority.
The Gamecocks enter the matchup with a 15-player roster, although several players have dealt with preseason injuries. Staley said having a larger roster has allowed injured players to focus on rehabilitation without feeling pressured to return too quickly.
South Carolina also added transfer guard Brooke Quarles-Daniels, while Staley indicated that the point guard role could be handled by committee this season.
With the unusual setting, weather questions and a reshaped roster, all eyes will be on Staley and the Gamecocks when they take the court.
