dawn Staley is a basketball legend, renowned for her impressive career as a player and coach. Born on May 4, 1970, Staley has made history in multiple aspects of the sport.
As a player, Staley had a storied career, playing college basketball for the University of Virginia and professionally in the WNBA for the Charlotte Sting and Houston Comets. She won three Olympic gold medals and was a six-time WNBA All-Star.¹
Staley’s coaching career has been equally impressive. She began her coaching tenure at Temple University, leading the Owls to six NCAA tournaments and four Atlantic 10 titles. In 2008, she took the reins at the University of South Carolina, transforming the Gamecocks into a national powerhouse. Under her leadership, the team has won three national championships (2017, 2022, and 2024), six NCAA Final Fours, and seven SEC tournament titles[2).
Staley’s accolades extend beyond her coaching achievements. She was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012. Staley has also received numerous coaching awards, including the Naismith Coach of the Year Award and the SEC Coach of the Year Award.
In addition to her coaching duties, Staley has been involved with USA Basketball, serving as an assistant coach and head coach for various teams. She led the U.S. women’s national team to a gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics.
