Florida redshirt senior quarterback Graham Mertz’s college football season is over following the Gators’ loss to Tennessee on Saturday. Mertz confirmed his injury on his X account Monday.
According to a report from CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, Mertz suffered a knee injury on a play in which he completed a 13-yard touchdown pass to tight end Arlis Boardingham to give the Gators a 10-0 lead over No. 8 Tennessee in Knoxville. Mertz’s injury occurred at 7:18 in the third quarter.
After true freshman DJ Lagway took over, the Vols were able to pull off a 23-17 overtime victory. Lagway was 9 of 17 for 98 yards with a touchdown pass and an interception after filling in for Mertz. His interception set up the tying score for the Vols, but he did toss a game-tying touchdown in the waning moments of the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime.
Lagway reportedly will be the starter for the Gators for the rest of the season, as he was splitting reps with Mertz before the latter’s injury. Saturday’s game against Kentucky will be Lagway’s first career SEC start, though he made a start earlier in the season against Samford on Sept. 7 when Mertz missed the game due to a concussion.
Mertz was in his second season with the Gators after transferring from Wisconsin. During the 2019 recruiting cycle, he was a four-star recruit out of Blue Valley North High in Mission, Kansas.
Here’s what you need to know about Mertz’s injury:
Graham Mertz injury update
Mertz appeared to suffer his lower-leg non-contact injury following a throw to Boardingham for a touchdown to push the UF lead to 10-0 in the third quarter. Mertz began to hobble and went down in pain after shuffling away from a Tennessee defender, who did not contact the Florida quarterback.
Mertz did not return to the game and finished the game completing 11 of 15 passes for 125 yards and the touchdown pass. He did lose a fumble on the goal line in the first half, which left points on the board for the Gators. If Mertz’s season is over, will have finished the season completing 72 of 94 passes (76.6%) for 791 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions.
He struggled in the season-opening 41-17 loss to Miami but, after missing the Samford victory, completed 61 of 74 passes (82%) for 700 yards, six touchdowns and one interception.
