Former West Brom Youngster Quevin Castro Dies at 25 After Collapsing During Friendly in Portugal

The football world has been left devastated following the sudden death of former West Bromwich Albion midfielder Quévin Castro, who passed away at the age of just 25 after collapsing during a pre-season friendly in Portugal.

Castro was representing Portuguese side Real Sport Clube against top-flight opponents Estrela da Amadora at the Estádio das Seixas in Malveira on Saturday, August 22, when tragedy struck during the early stages of the match. Reports state that he collapsed on the pitch and received immediate medical attention, including resuscitation efforts and the use of a defibrillator, before being taken to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The match was subsequently postponed as players, staff and supporters struggled to process the shocking incident.

Castro had a special connection with English football. He joined West Bromwich Albion in 2021 and made his first-team debut against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup. He also made a league appearance for the Baggies and spent time on loan with Burton Albion, Notts County and Gateshead before leaving the club in 2023.

After spells with several English clubs, Castro returned to Portugal and joined Real Sport Clube earlier this summer, hoping to begin another chapter of his football career.

Instead, the football community has been forced to mourn a young player whose life and career were tragically cut short.

West Bromwich Albion described themselves as “devastated” by Castro’s passing and confirmed that the club would honour his memory during their match against Burnley, with a period of applause in the 25th minute and players wearing black armbands.

Real Sport Clube also paid an emotional tribute, remembering Castro as much more than a footballer and describing him as a valued member of their family. Estrela da Amadora likewise expressed their deepest condolences to Castro’s family, friends and everyone connected with Real Sport Clube.

Quévin Castro’s death is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly life can change. At only 25, he still had so much ahead of him, both on and off the football pitch.

The thoughts of the football community are now with his family, friends, teammates and everyone who knew him.

Rest in peace, Quévin Castro. 🕊️💔
