Maybe the sky isn’t falling for Texas football recruiting. The Longhorns got a victory Thursday evening when 2025 four-star defensive lineman Josiah Sharma flipped his commitment from Oregon.
Sharma, the No. 30 defensive line prospect in the nation, according to the 247Sports composite ratings, is 6 feet 4 and 320 pounds. He had been committed to the Ducks since June.
The Folsom (Calif.) High School star is the 16th commitment for Texas’ class, which is No. 13 nationally. He is also the second defensive lineman to commit, along with fellow four-star prospect Lance Jackson. However, Sharma gives the Longhorns heft in the middle of the line that the 260-pound Jackson does not.
UT went through a rough patch in July when it missed out on two in-state five-star prospects, as wide receiver Dakorien Moore pledged to Oregon and linebacker Riley Pettijohn committed to Ohio State. Even so, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian is as calm as ever.
“I’ve never been one to panic in recruiting,” Sarkisian said at the Texas High School Coaches Association Convention on Monday. “I think history kind of shows we usually close pretty good as we get into the season, as we get into December.”
He has a point. Texas landed five-star defensive backs Kobe Black and Xavier Filsaime last December, two of their highest-rated recruits in that cycle. They also got a commitment in October from five-star receiver Ryan Wingo, a player who could make big waves as a freshman this fall.
Four-star defensive tackle Antonio Coleman has flipped his commitment from Alabama to Auburn.
The Saraland (AL) product originally committed to the Crimson Tide on March 2. The Longhorns entered his recruitment fairly late, extending an offer to Coleman on June 5, but were still able to get him to Austin for an unofficial visit on July 25.
The visit didn’t appear to be enough, as Coleman announced his commitment to the Tigers via social media just days later. Texas also received a commitment from four-star defensive tackle Josiah Sharma days prior which may have played a role in Coleman’s decision.
Coleman is ranked the No. 14 defensive lineman in the nation and No. 10 overall prospect in Alabama for the 2025 recruiting class, according to 247Sports. As a junior in 2023, he recorded 62 tackles, 22.5 tackles for loss and four sacks.
Steve Sarkisian and his staff still have plenty of time to bolster the position prior to December. As it stands now, Texas currently owns the No. 14 class in the nation for the 2025 cycle.
