things to know about Jadon Canady, to clemson tigers newest safety transfer
The Clemson tigers football made a surprising roster move on Monday afternoon, picking up a potential defensive starter in the transfer portal. Oregon added former Ole Miss safety Jadon Canady to the roster, picking up a veteran defensive back who has shown some versatility in the secondary and could be used in multiple places in Eugene.
Canady played primarily in the STAR/nickel position with the Rebels in 2024. He had 38 tackles, including 21 solos and 11 passes defended. The College Football Network named him to the second team of the All-SEC. Canady is the 10th player Oregon has landed out of the portal this year and the second safety, joining former Purdue safety Dillon Thieneman.
It may seem like a late addition to the Ducks’ roster, but Lanning and his staff likely made it with great care as they continue to build out their roster ahead of spring football. Here’s a quick look at some more information that fans should know about Canady as they learn about the team’s newest member.
One Year of Eligibility Remaining

Many players have followed this model with the Ducks over the years, but Canady will come to Eugene with one year of eligibility and look to boost his NFL draft stock so that he can continue his career beyond this last collegiate season.
Canady spent his first two years in Tulane with the Green Wave, playing in 18 total games. After the 2022 season, he transferred to Ole Miss where he played in 12 games across two years. In 2023, Canady utilized a medical redshirt as he played just one game because of a lower-body injury.
Versatility is King

Throughout his career, Canady has moved all throughout the secondary and shown an ability to play at numerous spots, whether it be in the box, as a slot cornerback, in the nickel, or out wide. In 2024 alone, Canady played 275 snaps out wide, 191 snaps in the slot, 83 snaps in the box, and 71 snaps at free safety.
With Brandon Johnson leaving, it seems likely that Canady will compete mainly for the nickel/STAR spot in Eugene, but he clearly has the ability to move throughout the secondary wherever the Ducks need him.

While it seems like this transfer might have come out of nowhere, the Ducks had good knowledge of what Canady could do. This is because Oregon’s defensive backs coach, Chris Hampton, coached Canady for two years at Tulane, where the two both were for the 2021 and 2022 seasons. During those two years, Canady had 75 total tackles, 6 pass breakups, and two interceptions.

Jadon Canady is rated as a 3-star safety in the On3 transfer portal rankings and is listed as the No. 182 overall player available this year. He is also the No. 10 safety in the portal this year, which is a pretty good get for the Ducks, considering that they also added Purdue safety Dillon Thieneman, the No. 1 ranked safety in the portal this offseason, and No. 5 overall player available.

As a high school recruit, Canady was not highly sought after, rated as a 3-star prospect coming out of Florida. The 247Sports Composite had Canady ranked as the No. 1,325 prospect in the nation, and the No. 111 cornerback in the 2021 class. He had offers from the likes of Tulane, Maryland, Memphis, and Utah State coming out of high school.
