SHEFFIELD Wednesday midfielder Jarvis Thornton has signed a new two-year deal.

The 20-year-old made 27 appearances in all competitions last season, including 12 league starts and his progress has been rewarded.

Sporting director Simon Wilson said: “This new contract reflects our belief in Jarvis and gives him the platform to continue his development.”

Meanwhile, Owls striker Ike Ugbo has spoken of his relief at joining Cypriot side Apollon Limassol on a season-long loan.

Ugbo had netted no league goals for Wednesday in his past two campaigns.

He said: “The past two years have been quite difficult for me. I felt that I needed a fresh start, a new environment and a competitive team where I could rediscover my best form.

“There was interest from clubs in Belgium, Turkey and even MLS. However, I had already decided that I wanted to return to the European football scene and join a club with high ambitions.”

Leicester City boss Russell Martin has stressed that he is keen to keep Sheffield United target Harry Souttar, while firing a broadside in the direction of Chris Wilder.

The Foxes have fielded a couple of offers for the Australian international, who previously spent a successful loan spell at United.

Martin said: “I wouldn’t usually comment on people staying or going but we have an opposition manager in Chris – who I really like – who keeps talking about one of our players. But right now there’s literally nothing to talk about.”

York City have beaten off interest from Notts County to sign Barnsley-born left-back Harry Boyes, who has joined from Southend United.
