is heading into the end of October in an enviable position.

After a stunning loss to Arkansas and an uncomfortably close overtime victory against Florida, the Vols improved to 6-1 in emphatic fashion last Saturday, knocking off Alabama 24-17 and lighting up some hard-earned cigars inside Neyland Stadium.

With the win, coach Josh Heupel’s team moved up to No. 8 in the US LBM Coaches Poll and burnished its standing as a contender for a spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff. The fact that rise came at the expense of a longtime rival who spent the better part of the past 20 years tormenting it only made it sweeter.

How will Nico Iamaleava and the Vols follow up that signature win? By waiting.

Here’s what you need to know about Tennessee and its schedule for Week 9 of the 2024 college football season:

Does Tennessee play today?

On the heels of its win against Alabama, Tennessee will be idle during Week 9 of the college football season.

It’s the Vols’ second and final bye week of the season. Hopefully for Heupel and his team, the return from this bye week will go better than the first one, as the loss to Arkansas came immediately after a week off from play.

Tennessee will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 2 with a home game against what has been a struggling Kentucky team.

The Vols’ schedule will theoretically get more difficult after that, with two of its final three games coming against teams currently ranked in the top 25 of the Coaches Poll — a matchup against No. 2 Georgia on Nov. 16 and a Nov. 30 season finale against No. 25 Vanderbilt, both of which will come on the road.

Tennessee has won five in a row against the Commodores, but lost seven in a row to the Bulldogs.
