FSU football predictions, odds: Will Duke get first win over Florida State? Expert picks

Portrait of Dan Rorabaugh

Florida State football fans are hoping for history to outweigh recency Friday night against Duke.

FSU is off to a horrid 1-5 start. The Seminoles are coming off a bye week after a 29-13 loss to No. 9 Clemson. It was quarterback Brock Glenn’s first start in place of the injured DJ Uiagalelei, and the sophomore did OK, throwing for 226 yards and two touchdowns with an interception.

Meanwhile, the Blue Devils are 5-1 in their first season under coach Manny Diaz. They suffered their first loss before their bye last week in a 24-14 road game against Georgia Tech. Duke boasts a tough defensive front and a big-armed quarterback in Maalik Murphy, and they hope that’s enough to pick up the program’s first win against the Seminoles (Duke is 0-22 all-time vs. FSU).

Can FSU extend their dominance over Duke? Here’s what college football experts predict will happen, plus odds for the game:

PickDawgz: Back Duke

Chris Ruffolo writes: “I’m on Duke here. It’s wild to me that Duke has never beaten Florida State. However, these are different circumstances as Florida State is challenging for one of the worst power conference teams in the country. Duke hasn’t played the toughest of schedules in fairness, but it’s not like it gets any tougher here in reality. Give me Duke laying the points.”

FSU Wire: FSU wins 24-17

JD McCarthy writes: “The Seminoles have never lost to Duke and I do not think that will change this season. Duke’s record is far more impressive but it has not exactly been against the toughest teams. FSU looked improved with Brock Glenn at quarterback and I’m expecting the offense to come out of the bye and get the job done while the defense keeps Duke’s offense contained.”

SI.com: Take the under

Reed Wallach writes: “While it’s tough to back Florida State to stay competitive against any team, Duke is being vastly overrated. The team hasn’t beat a team inside the top half of the country in terms of net EPA/Play. Now, Florida State is a far cry from that, but does still have talent on both sides of the ball as well as the ability to possibly be recovering from its rock bottom rating. With Glenn taking over, I believe there is potential upside to this team against a Duke team I don’t rate very highly.”

College Football Network: FSU wins 22-16

Will Helms writes: “At some point, pride is going to kick in for that Seminole unit. If Duke controls the trenches in this one, go ahead and bet against the Seminoles in every game for the remainder of the season. But if that unit plays better and limits Duke’s rushing attack, Maalik Murphy might struggle. This could flip on a late turnover. I might regret backing the Seminoles, but I’m giving them one more chance to show me they haven’t quit and can beat less talented teams.”

ClutchPoints: Go with Duke

Cameron Zunkel writes: “Neither team scores a whole bunch of points, so a 23-20, or similar, low score is possible Friday night. With that said, I do not like Florida State this year, and I do not like them on the road. I think Duke can win this game by four points, so I will take Duke to cover the spread at home.”
