From the moment a little more than 200 people crammed into a room inside Kenan Memorial Stadium for the news conference confirming the blockbuster move, one thing was clear- Belichick was going to bring unprecedented attention to the program. The six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach’s transition brought extensive media coverage to the program as seen during the Tar Heels’ spring practice. The heightened interest in UNC also opened doors to potential media ventures and soon HBO came calling with its “Hard Knocks” offseason series.

At the end of last month, it was reported that HBO’s upcoming “Hard Knocks” series would feature UNC. It was going to be the first time that “Hard Knocks” was going to collaborate with a college football program, further underlining Belichick’s impact. However, after weeks of talks over an agreement, the deal was called off. “NFL Films had discussions with Coach Belichick and UNC about appearing on ‘Hard Knocks’ this offseason but couldn’t reach an agreement,” an NFL Media spokesperson told CBS Sports on March 4. According to CBS Sports, issues over creative control led to the deal falling apart.

 

At first, it was believed that this might be centered around Belichick. Given his history of keeping things under control, it would not have been surprising that Belichick would want control over the program’s content. But there is a twist in the story. The Sports Gossip Show has brought out another tea behind the whole decision, which changes the picture somewhat.
